Planets in the Dusk

The view upstream on the impounded Catawba River from Castle Bridge (historically, "Cassell's Bridge") near Rutherford College, North Carolina, on September 6, 2005, includes the Moon, three planets and a star. Jupiter is to the Moon's upper right; Venus is to the upper left; and the star Spica is below Venus. The third visible planet is the Earth, of course, which dominates the foreground and whose reflected light can be seen on the "dark side" of the Moon. Mount Mitchell, the highest point in eastern North America (east of the Black Hills, anyway), is on the horizon but hard to identify among low clouds.
