Observatories, Modern and Ancient

A guide's flashlight highlights a petroglyph not far from modern
Chaco Observatory in the background, red-lit to preserve visitors'
night-vision. The carving may record the solar corona as seen during
a total solar eclipse which occured over Chaco Canyon on the afternoon
of July 17, 1097. (This photograph was made in 2000, before new construction
blocked this view of the modern observatory.)
