(Night on the Parkway)

Everyone who photographs
Eugene Figg's masterpiece of a bridge on Grandfather Mountain,
the Linn Cove Viaduct, shoots it from the same perfect vantage – but
usually not in the middle of the night. There's not a lot of traffic
on the Blue Ridge Parkway that time of "day,"
so my wife drove our Subaru back and forth a few times to trace
the bridge's graceful arc. The stars above are real; but the skyscape
was shot and added separately. The lights spread out across the
county are actually more stars I mapped into the
picture to masquerade as city lights below.
